Sachiko Shimizu

A light modern take on Japanese decorative aesthetics
Shimizu applies Rimpa-style silver decoration to a black ground to produce her elegant ceramic works. She says of her shapes and patterns that they are no match for those of plants and other natural forms. Shimizu draws inspiration from a wide variety of sources, Paring shapes down to transform them into patterns. The motifs are rhythmically laid out over the small areas of the vessels, and surprise us with a modern lightness enhancing the beauty of Japan’s traditional work.
