Yasuko Sakurai
The beauty of light and shadow, created by ceramics
Sakurai’s theme is light and shadow. Her earliest works were ceramic objects pierced with holes. Later, whilst studying in the French pottery town and renowned porcelain center of Liomges, she discovered the fascination of porcelain. The recent pieces displayed here were made by amassing a large number of tube shapes, buludiing vessels around them, and then removing the tubes to leave tubular holes. Depending on the angle of the holes in the pots they adopt round or elliptical shapes, which rhythmically enclose pockets of light and shade. Whilst grappling with the risky and difficult processes of drying and firing porcelain Sakurai tries out numerous creative possibilities, always engaging with the idea of light and shade in pottery.
